Healthy Homemade Dog Cookies made with carrot, oats, peanut butter & apple! Our favorite healthy dog treat recipe is packed with nutrients, easily made at home and is perfect for your favorite fur friend!
1cupunbleached all-purpose flouryou could use a wheat flour
1teaspoonbaking powder
¼cupshredded apple
¼cupshredded carrot
½cupcreamy peanut butterShould NOT contain Xylitol as it can cause toxicity in dogs
¼cupmilkAny milk you have home would work as well
1egg
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat a baking sheet with non-stick spray, set aside.
In a food processor, or blender shred the oats. Pulse for 4 to 5 times until the oats are broken down into smaller pieces but not quite flour. (Makes it easier for pups to munch on them)
Shred the carrot and apple for the allotted amount needed for recipe.
In a large mixing bowl combine flour, oats, baking soda, shredded carrot, and shredded apple. Mix until the carrots and apples are coated with the flour/oat mixture.
In a bowl of a stand-up mixer, add peanut butter, milk, egg, and the flour mixture. Mix until you have a thick dough.
*NOTE* If you don’t have a stand-up mixer I would recommend using a big wooden spoon and not a hand-mixer as the dough is very thick and my hand mixer is not strong enough.
*NOTE* Also, if you don’t have a cover over your stand-up mixer, add half the flour, mix until almost combined and add the remaining. This way the flour will not spread everywhere.
On a floured surface, I used about 1 tablespoon of flour (you may need to use more) to roll the dough to a 1/4” thick.
*NOTE* Counter works perfectly, I love my OXO Good Grip pastry mat to roll any dough, just be careful when cutting with a cutter not to make an indent in your mat.
Use your favorite cookie-cutter and cut the cookies. I used a bone 1 ½ inch from Wilton and a star (1 inch) shape cookie cutter. You can use any cutters you have. If you don’t have any cutters, you can cut strips and break them to the desired length.
Place the cut treats onto the prepared cookie sheet
Bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes.
Flip the cookies and cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes
Cool completely on a cooling rack
