Applesauce Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies are moist, soft and packed with flavor. Delicious applesauce cookies that are simple to make and are absolutely delicious too!
Have you ever made cookies with applesauce? Applesauce makes cookies so moist and really changes the consistency to make cookies that are very different from your typical chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Don’t get me wrong – the applesauce doesn’t make these cookies super healthy, but I absolutely love the way they taste! And I have to admit that something in me just feels more justified eating multiple cookies when I know they are packed with applesauce and oatmeal!
Ingredients in Applesauce Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
2 cups applesauce
2 tsp baking soda
2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
4 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp nutmeg
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt
2 cups quick oats
1 (12 oz) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
How to make Applesauce Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
Preheat oven to 375°.
In a medium bowl, combine the applesauce and baking soda. Mix with a spoon and set aside.
Cream sugar, shortening and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer for 2-3 minutes. Add applesauce mixture and mix until well combined.
In a separate bowl, mix together 1 cup of flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt and then add to the sugar/shortening mixture. Mix together until well combined.
Add oats and mix. Add the remaining flour and mix just until combined.
Stir in the chocolate chips. Scoop the cookie dough with a cookie scoop onto prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 10 minutes or until the edges of the cookies just barely begin to turn a light golden brown.
Let the cookies cool on baking sheet for a few minutes and then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
HOW DO YOU MAKE PERFECT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES?
Making chocolate chip cookies is easy! Here are a few tips to getting perfect cookies every time!
- Most cookie recipes require that you mix the dry ingredients separately before adding the wet ingredients. This is an important step!
- Spend a little extra time when you mix the shortening and sugar. Creaming them together for 2-3 minutes will improve the consistency of your cookies.
- Preheat the oven. This will help your cookies turn out right every time!
- Use a cookie scoop! If you want all your cookies to be perfectly shaped and have them all be the same size, a cookie scoop is the way to go.
- Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Doing this will make it really easy to remove the cookies from your cookie sheet so that you don’t have to scrape them off the pan – they will just slide right off in perfect shape!
- Don’t over bake the cookies – when I take mine out of the oven, they still look slightly under baked but they will continue to bake on the cookie sheet for a couple more minutes so that’s ok!

This little one got to frost sugar cookies for the first time. Let’s just say that I think the “prinkles” were her favorite part of the whole thing and I was actually impressed at how many of them stuck to the cookie instead of being sprinkled all over the floor! She loved getting to do what the big kids were doing, and of course, she loved eating the finished product too!

These cookies were awesome and such a great way to use some leftover applesauce that I had!

My kids love love LOVE these!

Can I use butter instead of shortening? The recipe sounds delicious.
Jessica says
You sure can!

I have 4 frozen bananas — when thawed, they’ll be pretty much liquid. Would that work as part of the applesauce?
Jessica says
I guess it’s worth a shot? I’ve never tried it with 4 defrosted bananas in place of applesauce! Let me know how it goes!
FF says
I didn’t try using thawed frozen bananas instead of applesauce because I decided they’d probably be too liquid. But I think I will try mashed ripe bananas next time, since that texture is pretty much the same as applesauce, & everyone I know loves the combination of bananas & chocolate.
So I made the recipe as written & it’s very good. Also fairly healthy — a friend who’s diabetic says her blood sugar didn’t rise at all, which I think is due to the oatmeal & applesauce offsetting the sugar in the dough & the chocolate.
I was glad the cookies didn’t spread out too much & I assume that’s because the recipe calls for shortening instead of butter. But I plan to use the butter-flavored Crisco next time, since it has more flavor & I did think these cookies tasted just a little bland.
I do appreciate this nice recipe, including the fact that it makes a lot of cookies!

Could you substitutie butter for shortening?
Jessica says
You can, it does change the texture a bit though!

Soooo deliciously addicting! They’re yummy and perfectly moist. I made the recipe as is, no changes. I feel like these are even better the day after you make them! Thanks for the recipe!
